Wilbur Smith, bestselling author

Wilbur Addison Smith was born on 9 January 1933 in Broken Hill, in what was the British colony of Northern Rhodesia, and is now the country of Zambia.

Wilbur is a brilliant and compelling author. The characters in his books come alive to the reader. The reader can almost see, and grow to love, the countries in which the stories are set.

My favourites are his series about the Courteneys of Africa. Larger-than-life men have rip-roaring adventures as they set out to grow rich in the beautiful continent of Africa.

But I also love his series about the Ballantyne family. Also about heroic men having high-adventure, but every book is different, and has its own unique plot.

Showing his diversity as an author, Wilbur has also written the compelling Egyptian series. Mystery, heroism and adventure to the usual high standard, but in a different style.
