Smith Family Name, origin and meaning
The Smith family name was originally a craft or trade name. It meant a worker in metal.
The Smith name came from blacksmiths, workers in iron, bronze, tin or lead, rather than from silversmiths or goldsmiths. The word "smith" is derived from the anglo-saxon word "smitan", meaning to strike or hammer. From the same derivation comes the word "smite", rather archaic now, but much used in the King James Bible.
